FAMILY THERAPY

Family Therapy

“Family” is known as a building block of society, and families are variously represented in units with two parents, a single parent, members blended through marriage or re-marriage, and/or multi-generational households. Each family has a history, character, and primary mode of communication and interaction.

In a family unit, the whole is comprised of the sum of its parts. Every member contributes to the family system and health of the family. Within this context of multiple interactions and personalities, it follows that misunderstandings, miscommunications, tension, and conflict can easily develop. Family dysfunction can be fueled by chronic and longstanding issues, current circumstances, or acute crises such as illness, death, or divorce. Parent/child conflict is often the catalyst for families who seek counseling. Within family counseling, the mental health of each individual family member is also a concern.

We advocate for strong families in which feelings and opinions are appropriately expressed and respected, while values and roles as parents and children are defined. Verbal communication is obviously a cornerstone of the process, and therapy sessions are structured to facilitate emotionally safe, honest, productive conversations, and to teach and practice skills which can be utilized in the home.

Goals For Family Therapy Include:

1.     Conflict resolution.

2.     Acquire communication and parenting skills as needed.

3.     Cohesive family functioning.

4.     Attention to the mental health of each family member.
